Can I choose where I go for Occupational Therapy?
Will my insurance cover Occupational Therapy?
Occupational therapy is a health profession whose goal is to help people achieve independence, meaning and satisfaction in all aspects of their lives.
Occupational therapists:
- Apply their specific knowledge to enable people to engage in activities of daily living that have personal meaning and value.
- Develop, improve, sustain, or restore independence to any person who has an injury, illness, disability or psychological dysfunction.
- Consult with the person and the family or caregivers and, through evaluation and treatment, promote the client's capacity to participate in satisfying daily activities.
- Address by intervention the person's capacity to perform, the activity being performed, or the environment in which it is performed.
The occupational therapist's goal is to provide the client with skills for the job of living - those necessary to function in the community or in the client's chosen environment.
Do I need a referral?
Yes. If you feel that you may benefit from occupational therapy, discuss it with your physician. Ask your physician if it would be appropriate for you. Try to let your doctor know what improvements you would like to see in yourself. For instance, tell your doctor if you think that you might benefit from medical massage or need assistance in your activities of daily living.
Can I choose where I go for Occupational Therapy?
Absolutely! You have a right to choose where you go for occupational therapy. Even if your physician has an association, you may request a referral to Kittitas Valley Occupational Therapy or any other occupational therapist. (insurance coverage, however, may dictate where you go).
Will my insurance cover Occupational Therapy?
Call your insurance company/agent to determine your coverage, including maximum visits or amount spent in a calendar year. KVOT accepts most private insurance and Medicare.
Discussion points in talking to your insurance:
Does my plan cover occupational therapy at all? Am I limited by a set dollar amount per year? Am I limited to a set number of visits per year?
How often do I have to come?
Your physician and your therapist will determine the number of visits that are ideal for your treatment. However, I realize that you do have a life outside of therapy and will work to meet your schedule and needs.
Do you work with my doctor?
Yes. KVOT works with your physician to create a course of occupational therapy designed specifically for you. I will communicate my initial findings; write interval progress notes; and write a discharge summary to let your doctor know how you are doing.
